Azerbaijani grand master wins opener at Gibraltar festival

Azerbaijani grand master Shahriyar Mammadyarov has made a winning start to his Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival campaign after beating a Brazilian opponent.
Mammadyarov defeated Molina Roberto Junio Brita in the first round of the tournament`s Masters event.
The Azeri grand master is seeded second at the tournament after Russian Peter Svidler.
The festival brings together the world`s top grand masters, including British Michael Adams, Hungarian Judit Polgar, Latvian Alexei Shirov, Israeli Emil Sutovsky and British Nigel Short.
The Masters event brings together 246 chess players from 59 countries.
The Swiss system event will feature 10 rounds.
